Today Schutzhund is primarily a sport. It's original intent was in completing a group of fundamental exercises to use as a temperament test. The Europeans used these groups of exercises as a measure tomaintain their bloodline's workability, sound temperament and solid nerves.

At Vom Fieldcrest Shepherds our foundational breeding stock, Pacer and Uhli, have a full line of Schutzhund title-holders in their European bloodlines. At VFS we also import started and titled Schutzhund dogs for sale. Their ancestry is rooted in Schutzhund as well.

Schutzhund is more than a group of exercises put together to form a routine. It is a grueling training program that many dogs and handlers devote their lives to perfect. AtVFS we start all our puppies in at least one or more of the three foundational aspectsof Schutzhund. These fundamentals include protection, obedience, and tracking.

Protection is not just biting at anything that moves. The bite is something that is taught. With VFS pups thefull bite is bred into them from the genetics of their ancestors. The bite work starts as early as 8 weeks old. All of our pups and started dogs have a proper foundation of bite work that is full, hard and consistent.

Obedience means different things to many people.Schutzhund obedience is very specific. Our pups and started young dogs are taught the basics of obedience without compulsion. The very young pup is not able to handle the requirements of obedience due to lack of maturity. We do imprint the foundational steps of obedience by using motivational tools to build drive. It is our opinion that a veryregimented and strict obedience program should only be implemented after the pup is 12 months old.

Tracking is an area where many dogs score very low in the Schutzhund trial. It is another area where maturity is all-important. We at VFS start very early in the pup's life and teach them to use their nose to find objects or articles. This is not taught from compulsion but rather by motivation. Depending on the customer's requirements we will determine what kind of scent work will be imprinted with our young pups.

Vom Fieldcrest Shepherds are bred for the most intense drives and stable nerves which are only found in European blood lines.
