Green Started Dogs

Started Dogs are from 7 months through 13 months of age

Green started dogs come with different levels of training and must be specified exactly from the customer what he or she is looking for in a dog. The questions I will ask are:

  • What are your plans for the dog?
  • Do you have other pets in the family?
  • How many adults and children are in your family?
  • What kind of experience do you have training and handling working dogs?

Started-dogs are as implied. They have been started in many different skills in which a new owner can build on. These dogs are not for everyone. The started dog would be a good candidate for and experienced handler with some knowledge of how working dogs are trained and worked. These dogs come with a variety of foundational skills and have been introduced to many different experiences.

There are 3 or 4 primary phases in the different levels of training that must be followed.

These phase levels are:

  • The Learning Phase
  • The Correction Phase
  • The Proofing Phase
  • The Scenario Phase which is blended into the Proofing Phase

If one of these phase levels is circumvented for any reason, you will not have the performance with the accuracy needed to complete the intended training goal or performance goal as intended.

The new owner of a “Started Dog” must have a firm understanding of each phase level. These dogs are not for beginners who are working on their own without professional help.

Basic foundational skill levels for the Started Dog would be:

  • Socialization Training
  • Drive building
  • Over-coming obstacles
  • Obstacle training
  • Obedience training
  • Started on the bark and hold
  • Bite work foundations (sleeve work)
  • Bite work engagement for proper mechanics
  • Bite work targeting basics
  • Minimal pressure on the bite
  • The release on the bite
  • Scent recognition

The foundational basics list is not comprehensive but is an overview of some of the training requirements to be listed as a started dog. Obviously some dogs will be farther along on their training. Age and maturity is a big factor for dogs in training and is considered when placing a dog with a new owner.
